ABC Community Food Hub
Redistributing surplus food. Supporting community-led solutions tackling poverty in the ABC Council Area.
Reducing Waste. Feeding People.
Launched in 2022, the ABC Food Hub supports community organisations in the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon borough Council by redistributing surplus food from across the Borough.
Last year, we saved 48 tonnes of food from going to landfill and were able to redistribute it to community-led organisations and charities, reaching over 4,700 indirect beneficiaries.
How The ABC Community Food Hub Works
Food is collected from, or delivered by supermarkets, food retailers or manufacturers to our Craigavon based warehouse.
Food is then sorted, packed and if needed, refrigerated in our storehouse.
Food is then redistributed to partners such as Storehouse Banbridge, Armagh Foodbank, school breakfast clubs, local Social Supermarkets and many other community based, not-for-profit organisations.
Our Impact
Reduced food waste through a centralised location in the Borough to distribute surplus food that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Strengthened food security is locally created with over 4 tonnes of food saved from landfill every month. This allows us to make sure that unnecessary food waste in our area isn’t contributing to food insecurity.
Community partnerships built on trust and action have allowed us to build strategic partnerships with local food producers. This is not only great for those receiving much needed food, but also for businesses wanting to achieve their corporate social responsibility goals.
